History of Phi Delta Psi

On March 21, 1977 on the campus of Western Michigan University, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the winds of fraternal change were born. Phi Delta Psi Fraternity, Inc. was founded on the principles of eternal honor, perseverance, leadership, achievement and brotherhood. Our ten founding fathers created a Greek-lettered organization that embodied the “new” social, economic and political challenges of African-Americans males. The birth of FDY was imperative to our founders’ mantra of service to our fellow man and brother which would benefit their universities, families, community and the world.

In November of that year, Phi Delta Psi was incorporated in the State of Michigan as the 7th African- American fraternity in the country. Phi Delta Psi was built on the founding purpose of initiating men for the content of their character rather that the thickness of their hide. Our beloved founders felt that an intake process should only be conducted for the purpose of developing men who can achieve the highest ideals and academic excellence in order to serve as role models and contribute to the social enlistment of future generations.

Leadership is the first principle of
FDY and our Founders were accomplished leaders within the Western Michigan University community serving as athletes, scholars and faculty.

With due respect to the already existing Greek organizations, our Founders felt a need for change....this change was a new fraternity that would build new traditions and achieve new milestones for men that wanted to not follow the crowd, but their own heart…
